Congratulations
Congratulations to Enika Banerjee, Kazue Shamburg and Yukiko Yokono for their participation in the 40th Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of Teachers of Japanese last weekend (Saturday, March 1st) at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Enika Banerjee gave a presentation entitled “Innovative Learning: Crafting a Student-Driven Internship Course.” Our former colleague, Shinichi Shoji, currently teaching at Mie University in Japan presented his project with Chikako Mori on the “Japanese-U.S. Conversation Practice via ZOOM: Impressions and thoughts from the participating Japanese Students.” In addition to the presentations, there were discussion tables besides the presentations, making it a very informative and engaging conference. The Japanese Program will host the conference in Spring 2026, and we hope to make it another successful event. Preparations have already begun!

Upcoming Events
Poetry Slam
Yukko Yokono, Susana Cisneros, Don Cross, Maria Mahaffey and Xiaohong Hu Mueller invite you to the 8th Multi-Language Poetry Slam. Unfortunately, the inclement weather made us postpone the event. The new date and location will be announced soon. Please stay tuned and support this wonderful event.
Date & Time: March 24
Location: Fretwell 100
Save the Date for Witness in Residence: Aly Shaw on April 15 at 4 p.m.
Faculty: Please remember to invite your theme course students to block time for this spring’s Anabel Aliaga-Buchenau Witness in Residence Initiative (and let them know we try to do it for them once per semester). This spring, the Initiative is collaborating with the Department of Global Studies, as well as the Dean’s Office. Shaw plans to share her experience of leading campaigns to address community environmental concerns and to help students understand the tools and databases available to them for their research.
Thank you for all you do.
All the best,
Anabel
