Congratulations
Congratulations to Dr. Fang-yi Chao and Professor Xiaohong Muller for another successful year at UNC Charlotte’s International Festival. The Chinese Club performed a beautiful Dragon Dance again.
Congratulations to Professors Yukiko Yokono, Chikako Mori, Enika Banerjee for hosting students from Tohoku University this week and supporting the Japanese Club’s participation in the International Festival this Saturday.
On Friday, September 26, the Closing Ceremony of the cultural exchange between Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan and the UNC Charlotte Women’s Choir was held in Rowe 140, followed by a reception in Robinson Hall. This event marked the culmination of the #Music! Connection through Notes program, now in its fifth year.
This year, 23 students from Tohoku University participated in the program. Over the summer, they engaged in online correspondence with UNC Charlotte students studying Japanese. The Tohoku students arrived on Sunday, September 14, and experienced their homestay weekend on September 19–21. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all host families, especially Noha Ghali, Teaching Professor, Coordinator & Advisor of Arabic Studies, graciously welcomed Hikari Nishita, an engineering major at Tohoku University.
On Saturday, September 27, the students showcased their talents at the 47th International Festival. The venue resonated with live piano and heartfelt singing, creating a moving atmosphere. In addition to performing, the students collaborated with members of the Nihon (Japan) Club, Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy) Club, and Japanese Reading Club to host the Japanese cultural booth. Visitors enjoyed hands-on activities such as Yukata (kimono) fitting, origami folding, Karuta card games, and personalized bookmark-making using Japanese brush pens.
.
The group departed early the next morning, leaving the hotel at 4:30 a.m. to return to Japan. We are deeply grateful for the friendships formed and the cultural bridges built through this program, and we look forward to continuing our meaningful exchange with Tohoku University in the years to come.
Congratulations also to Dr. Mary LaMarca who worked tirelessly with the French Club to make and sell crepes at the International Festival. In addition, the French Club’s mascot, Masie the dog, marched together with representatives of the French Club and Dr. LaMarca in the parade of Nations.
