Congratulations to Dr. Javier García León and Dr. Mónica Rodríguez for the publication of “Linguistic labels of disabled people in Colombian news outlets An exploratory corpus-based study” in Spanish in Context, a top Hispanic Linguistics Journal Q1/Q2 – H-Index24.

Congratulations to Professor Shaun Stone for his impact on students during his 2025 Summer Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica. Students in SPAN 3202 had to give a presentation on a leader who had impacted their lives and inspired them. One student chose Professor Stone and described how much the study abroad trip had meant.

Congratulations to Dr. Bobby Hobgood who presented at the annual FLANC Conference (Foreign Language Acquisition in North Carolina) this weekend, marking his 32 consecutive year as a presenter at this event.  His presentations included:

  • Developing Listening and Speaking Skills with AI Resources
  • Guiding Students in Developing their Personalized Language Study Plan (with co-author Adriana Medina from the College of Education)
  • Then & Now: What’s New in World Language Teacher Prep (with Kristin Davin and Coreen Okraski from the College of Education)

Congratulations to Dr. Chikako Mori and Professor Enika Banerjee, who presented at FLAC on October 5, introducing their summer 2025 faculty-led study program, Business and Culture in Tokyo, which immersed students in Japanese business culture through real-world applications of classroom learning, followed by an engaging Q&A session.

Congratulations to Dr. Sandra Watts for completing  the Online Learning Consortium’s course “Digital Learning Transformation for Global Impact.”

Commencement

Please remember that each faculty member has to attend one Commencement ceremony per academic year (this includes December 2025, May 2026, and Summer 2026). The Fall 2025 ceremony for our college is scheduled on

Mental Health Awareness Workshop
Human resources is partnering with ComPsych Guidance Resources to offer a virtual workshop from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and provide ways of supporting one another in the workplace. Please register in advance.

Schedule a Flu Shot
No one has time for the flu. Schedule a flu vaccine at one of the convenient campus clinics happening throughout October.

Disability Services Training
Provost Troyer requested that the colleges provide their faculty and staff the opportunity to participate in disability training. Gena Smith from Disability Services will give a general overview of their services which include: accommodations and testing, as well as some recent policy updates. There will also be time for faculty/staff to ask specific questions. The training will take place on Wednesday, October 22 from 12:00-12:30pm via Zoom.

Dean Boyer’s Zoom Office Hours
Dean Boyer will hold two (1) hour zoom meetings for faculty/staff/students to join him on Zoom.

Cookies with Provost Troyer

Provost Troyer would like to have two separate “Cookies with the Provost” sessions with our college. These sessions are just for open conversation, a chance for AA employees (all faculty and staff) to meet/speak with the Provost in a relaxed, inviting setting. The first session will be on Monday, October 20 (4:00-4:45pm) and the second session will be on Thursday, November 13 (4:00-4:45pm). The location will be determined at a later date. Please fill out the Google form to RSVP. 

International Education Week
Celebrate UNC Charlotte’s global connections and contributions during International Education Week, Nov. 17-21. Events will feature food, music, dance and film from around the world. Student groups, faculty and staff can submit events to be included on the calendar by Friday, Oct. 17.
