CIVIQ -CHESS Initiative on Very Important Questions

CIVIQ – the Dean’s office will send the Call for Applications for research team proposals and team-taught classes during the upcoming academic year. For those of you new to CHESS, CIVIQ is intended to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching, as well act as a public-facing expression of our scholarly work. It will be a straightforward application that nonetheless provides the selection committee with enough detail for careful review. The Dean’s office will announce the recipients later this fall.

Request for Proposals: Witness in Residence Initiative

Submit a suggestion for the Witness in Residence initiative! Your suggestions for Spring 2026 are requested by September 29 for a residency tentatively scheduled for the week of  March 23. However, you are encouraged to submit whenever you encounter an interesting candidate and all themes are invited. For the Spring we are especially interested in a theme that is global and/or within the social/environmental sciences, to balance the recent local/humanities perspective. Please also send ideas for next Fall.

The latter may be of particular interest to anyone who is doing research with human subjects, including interviews, surveys, or focus groups. For faculty who receive FRG grants involving this type of work, money is withheld until the IRB approval has been completed.
Information about Niner Research, the grant lifecycle, and preparing grant budgets is also available on the website at the bottom of the page.

Gambrell Faculty Fellowship
The Charlotte Urban Institute is accepting applications for the 2025-26 Gambrell Faculty Fellowship program. With generous support from The Gambrell Foundation, the institute will provide grants up to $21,000 each for six projects related to quality of life in the Charlotte region.

New French Club Mascot
Maisie made her debut as the new French Club mascot. She is a nine month old Great Pyrenees! She will be part of the French Club, La Pause, which will take place about once a month. The idea behind it is the same principle as the programs where children with reading difficulties practice reading to shelter dogs. They de-stress because dogs are non-judgmental listeners. Plus petting Maisie is like a hit of feel good vibes. image.png

French Club: Cheese Tasting
Last week on Wednesday, at the French Club Meeting, students were invited to attend a cheese tasting. The cheese looked fabulous and there was a line in the hallway for students to participate in this event. Congratulations to the French Club, Dr. Mary LaMarca for organizing such a successful event and the French Program.
