International Translation Day Celebration

Wednesday, September 11, 2019

The Department of Languages and Culture Studies will host the 4th annual International Translation Day celebration on Friday, September 27, 2018 from 9:15 AM to 2:15 PM on the UNC Charlotte Main Campus, College of Education, 4th Floor. The event is FREE and light refreshments will be served. The Department hosts this event to celebrate translation as both a profession and literary bridge to other cultures. The event will celebrate translation in multiple languages. Specific events include:

  • Open House for students interested in Translation and Interpreting programs

  • Presentations on professional and literary translation

  • Student readings

  • Meet our next generations in Translation and Interpreting

  • Meet our future employers

  • An "untranslatable word game" with a prize!

Students who are interested in learning more about Translation and Interpreting would benefit most from this event as they can both learn from the events and people already working in the industry.

International Translation Day is celebrated each year on the Feast of St. Jerome, Sept. 30th. St. Jerome is the patron of scholars, librarians, and translators amongst others. In May of 2017, the United Nations passed a resolution officially recognizing this day as International Translation Day, which “is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security.”
